Katie Finnegan was born on May 14, 2003. Her parents enrolled her in dance , gymnastics and soccer classes at three years old. She loved gymnastics and started competing Level 5 in 2012 at 8 years old. She won AA title with a 37.975 at the New York Early State Championships.
Competing Level 6 for the 2013 season, she finished 1st AA with a 37.425 at the NYS Early State Championships. She tested out of level 7 in 2014 at the Manhattan Classic winning the AA title with a 38.375 and moved up to Level 8. At the NY State USAG Championships, she placed 1st AA with a 37.850, 1st on floor exercise and 2nd on uneven bars. She qualified for the Region 6 Super Team and finished 6th AA with a 37.925 and 3rd on uneven bars and floor exercise.
At 12 years old, as a level 9 gymnast in 2015, Katie finished 2nd AA with a 38.050 and 1st on uneven bars and balance beam at the NY State Championships. She placed 1st AA at the Region 6 Championships with a 38.100. 1st place uneven bars, 1st balance beam, 1st floor exercise and 2nd place vault. Katie won the Level 9 Eastern Nationals AA Title with a 37.950 and placed 1st on vault and floor, 2nd on uneven bars and 7th on balance beam. During her Level 9 season, Katie was also competing at Elite Compulsory and Qualifiers, qualified at the Ranch for the Hopes Championship, and was planning to verbal her commitment with a Top 5 NCAA gymnastics team.
Shortly after, in 2016, Katie left the culture of her gym and decided she needed a change. She dealt with the loss of her beloved grandfather, chose to stop homeschooling to go back to high school and found a new gym. 2018 was a fantastic first Level 10 season for Katie at Apex Athletics. She started competing Liukin Invitationals and came in 1st AA for her 4th NYS Championship. She came in 2nd AA for Region 6 and 7th AA with a 38.0 at Nationals in her first Level 10 Season. She also verballed with the University of Georgia on a full athletic scholarship for the 2022 season.
In 2019, Katie had a perfect season. She came in 1st AA at every meet with her highest AA score of 38.625 at the Presidential Classic, and received her highest vault (9.825) and bar (9.850) scores as well. She earned her 5th AA NYS USAG JO Title, came in 1st AA Region 6 for the 2nd time, and placed 6th AA at Nationals with a 38.125, 3rd in bars (9.675) in her 2nd Level 10 Season. In July 2019, she received a call from the University of Georgia asking if she could graduate early to join them for the 2021 season and she said “YES!” So, with SO MUCH coordination from her school district, in her last JO season, at 16 years old, Katie will be completing her Junior year at Kings Park High School, her Senior year online, and graduating an entire year early while fulfilling her commitment to a seven meet competition schedule with her Apex teammates as New York’s most decorated gymnast.
